A place of dirt, blue gums, koalas and kangaroos. 

A place that welcomed me as a foreign 

and that today is mine too” Marisabel Gonzalez

Marisabel’s work involves the convergence of her two backgrounds, painting and medicine. She is inspired by her daily clinical practice as an ultrasound technician as she finds similarities in the course of diagnosing a patient to what she does as an artist. A back and forth questioning and answering process takes place in the production of both types of imagery, which result in the combination of her medical knowledge with her visual mark making on the canvas. 

Her creative process makes reference to the sensitivity many people feel when discussing and confronting illness and entropy in the body. Through her paintings she tries to capture the range of emotions she senses from her patients as she scans them, from fear to joy and everything in between. Her work is an attempt to bring attention to the idea that if we keep things in perspective we would not see the pathological processes in our bodies as something abnormal but part of the journey of life. 

Since her arrival to Australia in 2007, she has been driven to the landscape as a source of belonging and although her work mostly takes off from medical subjects, it is not strange to find a “landscape twist” in them with the occasional representation of the scenery.
