“Learn to see beyond what you see and feel the emotion no matter what the subject, draw or photograph with that passion and in time, you will see. “
100 Artworks for a Koala entry: Title ‘Living with Hope’
Size: 28 cm x 36 cm (11 x 14 ins) | Medium: ampersand scratchboard & limited colour by ink
“ I chose this little Koala (‘Living with Hope’), as my subject; its history was that it was rescued in 2009 during the devastating Victoria Bushfires that resulted in the loss of thousands of Koalas and many other species to fire including nearly 400 people. On my visit to the Sanctuary just after the fires, this Koala was in recovery from burns to its feet, even with these injuries, it was feisty, remarkably resilient and a fabulous subject. I nestled the Koala into a half-burnt gum tree, which was appropriate; it gave rise for its plight to survive the bushfires.
Sadly, the Koala population struggles to survive and many of their species have been lost forever due to poor land management; we all should be more conscious with the essential forests and the protection of these amazing little animals as well as all other essential species within environment.“ Jan Lowe
Artist bio
Janice Lowe was born and lived in England, New Zealand and Australia; her professional career took her to the US, Canada South Africa, Europe, UK and back to Australia. She also crusaded for the rights of animals during this period.
Drawing/painting was a love, so any free time she painted, initially a self-taught artist, whilst she worked in New York and Toronto, completed a Fine Art Degree to formalise her passion. Admires the work of Mary Whyte, Richard Hanson, Harley Brown, David Taylor, Robert Bateman and the greats of Rembrandt, Sargeant, Vermeer, the beautiful drawing of Charles Barque and George Bridgman etc.
Stepping back from the fast pace of the professional arena, moved to the country from Melbourne to acreage with her beautiful man to Southern Victoria. Now has five horses and a cat and shares her life with a huge array of wildlife. Enjoys the intermittent visits of children, grandchildren and many friends. Changed her professional career in engineering to something she has loved all her life – “Art” – as a Professional Artist, exhibitor and teacher. Her works are in various Australian and international organisations. She teaches the art of Scratchboard and runs demonstrations, workshops and weekly classes.
Actively exhibiting internationally for the last 20 years and will be having two exhibitions in Melbourne AU in August and September 2021. She has had many successes and enjoyed the support of the judges for her unique style with winning international awards in the US, Europe, Australia and the UK. She has been invited to have her works published in Europe and the UK. Exhibits regularly in the US. And is an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists US (former VP & Editor, currently the SE Editorial team); Australian Guild of Realists Artists (Signatory member),(former VP, President & Editor), Victorian Artists Society, Assn of Wildlife Artists Inc UK, Queensland Wildlife Artists Society Inc; the Painted Wolf Foundation, The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV).
She is inspired by the words of her late father – he had passion for the planet and nature. He used to say – “learn to see beyond what you see and feel the emotion no matter what the subject, draw or photograph with that passion and in time, you will see”. He is her “inspiration”.
