100 Artworks for a Koala entry: Title: ‘Hope‘ | Size: w47cm x H 63 cm | Medium: Oil on linen
‘ This is ‘Hope’. She represents coming out of the dark past and shining a light on the plight to save our koalas. ‘Hope’ is a reflection of the expectation and desire to save this iconic Australian marsupial. When there is a bushfire Koalas cannot escape danger easily like other animals as they spend up to 18 hours a day sleeping in eucalyptus trees. Due to illegal fur trading, deforestation, bush fires, wild dogs and other environmental factors such as traffic, the population in Australia has greatly diminished. Over the past 30 years I have planted trees, protested to the Australian Parliament and fronted committees in an attempt to educate and bring forth positive change at all levels.
Currently koalas are vulnerable to extinction in the wild within the next 30 years. It is my wish that all animals will have the opportunity to live without threat or disease and that ‘Hope’ will guide everyone to understand the critical need to protect all wildlife and their forest habitats.” Rose Watson
